CERTIFICATION IPC J-STD-001 CERTIFIED IPC SPECIALIST (CIS)

Course Description

The five-day J-STD-001 Certified IPC Specialist Course is modularised into five modules. Students may select two to five days to complete the course based on the required skill and knowledge. This course details every bit and piece of the manufacturing process with extreme precision, from material handling to final inspection. Hands-on lab work is part of this course. On July 19, 2001, the Department of Defense (DoD) adopted this document for use by its branches and units. The J-STD-001 standard focuses purely on Electronic products that range from simple to high-performance life support systems that must meet industrial standard requirements for process control.

Certification

After completing the course, students will take an open book written examination and be required to perform acceptable rework and repairs based on IPC J-STD-001 Procedures. A student who completes this course is rewarded with an IPC J-STD-001 Certified IPC Specialist Certification that stays Valid for Two(2) Years.
Students who previously earned their Certified IPC Specialist (CIS) certification within the last two years may participate in a relevant recertification course/ training.

Who this course is for

Anyone seeking to gain a basic understanding of the entire manufacturing process must attend the IPC J-STD-001 Certified IPC Specialist (CIS) training. Certain job characteristics are included in this category, but are not limited to those.

  • Production/Rework Operators
  • Inspectors, Technicians
  • Quality Control
  • Manufacturing or Process Engineers
  • Management PersonnelQuality professionals and executives who want to better understand the impact of quality on their products and processes.
  • Anyone responsible for the quality and reliability of electronics assemblies.

Curriculum:

Module 1 – Introduction – Basic Requirements (Mandatory)

The J-STD-001, basic document usage, and process requirements sections of this module provide information about the J-STD-001. All knowledge modules in the program must be completed and certified before certification to additional knowledge modules can be granted.

  • Materials
  • Component and equipment requirements
  • general soldering and assembly requirements
  • Cleaning
  • PCB and conformal coatings
  • Rework and repair

Module 2 – Wire, Terminal Assembly and Soldering

Lecture covers manufacturing process requirements for wire and terminal assemblies in addition to this additional knowledge module. In the hands-on/Practical portion of this additional knowledge module, students learn how to wire and mount terminals to the machine in order to obtain the second part of this additional knowledge module.

  • The basics of swaging terminals to PCBs
  • Attachment of wires to terminals

Module 3 – Through-Hole Components

Lecture covers process requirements for through-hole assemblies produced using a process and covers the process requirements for through-hole assemblies fabrication. The students receive instruction and hands-on practice for through-hole assemblies in the second portion of this additional knowledge module.

  • Details of the forming and placement of through-hole components on circuit boards
  • Soldering criteria of through-hole components

Module 4 – Surface Mounting of Components

In subsequent lectures, we will discuss the process requirements for surface mount assembly processes. In the hands-on/Practical portion of this additional knowledge module, students learn how to surface mount assemblies to the machine in order to obtain the second part of this additional knowledge module.

  • Placement of the surface mount components to a PCB/flex circuit
  • solder requirements of the surface mount components

Module 5 – Inspection Criteria

The lecture covers the process requirements for wire and terminal manufacturing processes in addition to surface mount and through-hole manufacturing processes. In this hands-on/practical part of the additional knowledge module, the students are given instruction and practice for inspecting wires and terminals, surface-mount assemblies, and through-hole components.

  • Inspection criteria from modules 2, 3 & 4
  • Process control methodologies such as sample inspections
